Homeowner & ADU FAQs

Building an ADU or finishing a garage conversion? Here are straightforward answers about testing, paperwork and getting ready for your inspection.

I’m building an ADU. How do I know which tests I need?

Send us your approved Title 24 energy-compliance documents and any notes from your contractor or building inspector. We review the field-verification items listed for your project and explain what we can handle. Every ADU is different, so we confirm the scope before booking.

What is the difference between Title 24 paperwork and HERS / ECC testing?

Your energy-compliance plans describe how the ADU is designed to meet the energy requirements. HERS / ECC field verification checks the applicable items actually installed at the property. Permit Boost handles the agreed field testing and related rater documentation; send us any paperwork request you receive so we can identify the next step.

My ADU has a mini-split with no ducts. Do I still need testing?

You do not need duct leakage testing, but you still need an on-site inspection for the required HERS / ECC verification. We inspect your mini-split installation and verify the applicable items in your approved Title 24 documents. Call (818) 835-2552 or request a quote to schedule your inspection.

When should I contact you, especially if my plans require QII?

Contact us while construction is still underway. QII means Quality Insulation Installation, and the required checks must be coordinated while the relevant insulation and air-barrier details can still be inspected. Do not wait until everything is covered. For HVAC testing, tell us when the equipment will be fully installed, operational and accessible.

My ADU is already finished. Can you help before my final inspection?

Yes—send us your project documents, any inspector notes and your final inspection date. We will review what is still needed and confirm the next available appointment. If something that requires verification has already been covered, we need to review the situation before promising that the work can be completed. Same-day appointments depend on availability and carry an additional rush fee, confirmed before booking.

Do I need a permit number or CHEERS account before my inspection?

You can request a quote and have your inspection completed before providing your permit number, but we need the permit number to complete your report. It connects your compliance documentation to the permitted project for state and local building-department requirements. We also need the required CHEERS account and project information to generate the final forms. We will guide you through those steps so your paperwork is ready for permit closeout.

What is CHEERS, and why is there a registry fee?

CHEERS is the registry we use to create and register the applicable compliance forms and rater results. A registry fee may apply separately from the field-testing service. You can fund the required CHEERS account, or we can arrange to pay the fee and include it on your invoice. We explain the charges before proceeding.

Will I get PDF reports that I can print for my inspector?

Yes. Once the applicable forms are completed through CHEERS, we can email you PDF copies to save or print. The forms still need to be generated through the registry. Your building department decides which documents and submission format it requires, so send us any specific instructions from your inspector.

What happens if my ADU does not pass a test?

A failed test is a measurement showing that an item did not meet the applicable test criteria; it is not a violation notice issued by Permit Boost. We explain the results so your contractor can make the correction, then arrange a retest. We confirm any return-visit charges before booking. Final approval remains with your building department.

Do I need to be home, and how should I prepare?

You or an authorized adult can arrange access for the visit. Let us know who will meet us, whether the ADU is occupied and whether there are any access restrictions. Keep the equipment and areas we need to inspect accessible. We confirm any project-specific preparation with you or your contractor before the appointment.

How much does it cost, and when will I receive my documents?

We quote each project based on the required verification, number of systems, location and any additional visits or registry work. Send your project details for a quote. We confirm the expected document turnaround for your job; completion depends on the required checks, any corrections and the necessary project and registry information being ready.
